Siberian Huskies - Appearance

Siberian Huskies are working dogs and should display a considerable amount of strength. Dogs that come close to the official AKC standard are compactly built and do not show any signs of being overweight. Males are usually bigger than females. Their height ranges from 21 to 23 inches when measured at the withers. Females are rather feminine, yet showing no weakness. They reach the height of about 20-22 inches and weight from 35 to 50 pounds, ten pounds less than males.

Overall, Siberian Huskies are balanced dogs and should have well-proportioned bodies. The dog's body is slightly longer than it is tall, with a straight back and well-sprung ribs. The ribs narrow some to the stomach to allow the ease of movement. The forelegs are straight and should never appear heavy. The gate is smooth and light.

The deep chest tapers to the medium-sized head. The muzzle is moderately long, resembling neither pointing dogs, nor dogs with squarely-shaped muzzles. The eyes that can be of brown, blue, or parti-colored are almond like and have a keen expression. The highly set ears are always erect with slightly rounded tips.

The Siberian Husky has a double coat with a dense under coat and straight outer hairs. It is of medium length, yet a good means of warmth isolation. It can be of any color. Siberian Husky males shed once a year, whereas females change their coat twice a year. Regular brushing and washing a Siberian Husky with the periodicity of six weeks is recommended to help it shed faster.

Siberian Huskies display personality traits found in the best representatives of the canine world. They are friendly with other pets and devoted to their masters, yet reserve with strangers and rather independent. Since Huskies were born to work in the team, they enjoy the presence of similar dogs and follow the rules of hierarchy.

Siberian Huskies are robust dogs that do not have inherited diseases. They suffer mostly from PRA (progressive retinal atrophy), cataract, glaucoma, and some other ailments. The life span averages 11-13 years.

Siberian Huskies are not recommended for novice owners. These dogs do better in cool climates and need a lot of everyday exercise. Though Siberian Huskies are rather quiet in an apartment and seem to be OK, a house is better suited for them. The ease of upkeep, amiable personality, and a wide range of uses have provided for much popularity. Hence, Siberian Huskies are one of the most popular and loved breeds of dog.
